SEIU Removes Stewards

As many people know, the UHW trustee's started forcibly removing union stewards from Orange County since the beginning of March. Eight and counting.

This has come as a shock to many employees who respected and valued their efforts spent representing them. I am continually having members approach me and ask, "What's going on?. How can this happen?"

It is difficult answering these questions. It is not like these stewards were poor stewards, trouble makers or uninvolved. These individuals are experienced stewards who have worked hard representing members of our union for quite a long time. We have lost our Rep Chair, Chief Steward, and our previous Contract Specialist.

I have worked with these individuals for quite a few years and have great respect for them as individuals and as stewards. In removing these stewards, the trustee's are doing little but harming the individuals these stewards represent and validating the fears members have that SEIU does not care about their voice. The constituents of these stewards did not want them removed and they did not vote them out.

So the question I constantly hear is how did this happen? The answer is simple, our local is under a trusteeship. During this time our local's constitution and bylaws have been removed and all the normal rules have been thrown out the window. When placing our local under the trusteeship the Trustees could have opted to immediately remove all stewards and start a new. They have the right to do this under a trusteeship.

Is it right? I don't think so and from the grumbling I hear from the majority of our members they don't either.

Since the members didn't want it, why did they do it? This is a good question. In our last Steward Council, Dave Regan addressed this issue and his response is they only were removing stewards who refused to not push decertifications and petitions to stop union dues and cope withdrawals.

Unfortunately my experience has shown this is not the case. Yes some of the stewards who were removed were pushing all of the above. However, one of the individuals removed I know for a fact never done any of the above and had been completely silent on the trusteeship issue entirely. Another four of those removed were on the fence on the issue and were only sharing both sides of the issue to members.

I personally was suspended from being able to represent members until meeting with the Union Reps. In my long talk with them, these were not the only three things being asked of me. The direction of my questioning mainly focused upon whether I was ready to go forward with SEIU's agenda or with NUHW. I fully expected to be removed as a steward as those before me. As I explained to them, when it comes to union politics, as always I will continue to take the role of providing my members with as much information pro's and con's and letting them make their own decisions. As a steward, I do not feel it is my role to tell members what to do but provide them with information to help them make their own decisions. The only loyalty I have is to my fellow members and to no leaders. In my mind, our union is the dues paying members not those we pay to represent us.

Surprisingly, they did not remove me. At least not yet. I say this because from what I have seen from the stewards who were removed at my location, they were acting the same. They were just providing the members with information. They were on the fence as far as the NUHW / SEIU UHW issue but SEIU decided to push them off the fence so their feet are firmly planted with NUHW. Quite a few members now feel the same.

These are crazy times... Only time will tell how things will progress.

  1. Brent - thanks for your story.

Should you remain as a Steward (which IMHO is not very likely now), it is my hope you do not get tarred with the brush of being a "collaborator" with SEIU.

That's pretty much what is going down up in NorCal, where entire Steward councils have been dismissed en masse, and SEIU is now scrambling to find someone, anyone willing enough to go against the expressed wishes of his or her peers in order to be called "Steward."

  2. I find it sad that the Orange County Steward Council has so many sycophants on-board with SEIU's agenda. They see exactly what Tammy and Veronica are up to, and yet, they say nothing, or worse, actively participate in the B.S. that occurs.
It appears that nearly all of the stewards with any backbone have been forced out, and all that are left are the 'puppets'.
I was told that an employee at the Anaheim Hospital received a Corrective Action level for not dusting a shelf in his work area, and that the "Provisional" Steward who represented him allowed management to issue the write-up!
None of the Stewards who were "fired" would have allowed this to occur!
The membership should be upset that SEIU is screwing with them - just wait for the sell-out when SEIU bargains our new contract in less that 2 years; we'll see changes to our sick-time, co-pays, family medical coverage, pension, and stingy raises to boot! Don't forget - Kaiser and SEIU are going to be negotiating the contract in the middle of a recession - how would you like a 10-year long contract (with no right to strike) that was negotiated during a recession? - that's why we need to get rid of SEIU!!!!
Make sure that you vote SEIU right out of Kaiser and vote for NUHW to be our new (old) Union.

  3. For you information not all of the Stewards left are per you words "It appears that nearly all of the stewards with any backbone have been forced out, and all that are left are the 'puppets'." We are not puppets, but we have chosen to move on with our lives. A lot of us old Stewards have seen and been the way that the previous SEIU UHW Leadership had run things and how they treated the Southern California Staff vs the Northern California Staff. There are a lot of STRONG Stewards left that have been handling many more cases, in areas that the ex-stewards actually refused to represent and to go to protect and represent the members and the contract.

This also would reflect on the Membership as well, because if you actually take the time to compare the Northern and Southern Languages in the SEIU UHW Collective Bargaining Agreement. You will find that Northern Calfornia comes out with better language then Southern California.

I,have personally wittnessed the re-birth of OUR SEIU UHW and really like to direction that it is going in. The KDSC met this past weekend and started laying the ground work for the talks of the 2010 Bargaining and the Election of New Stewards under the Trusteeship.

Now, as for the Stewards that were so called FIRED, let me clear something up now. They were fired, but they were removed. You can't be promoting and supporting one Union, while you belong to another. I believe that All of them were talked too and they are the ones that made the decision to step down/be removed themselves. The ex-stewards are the ones that chose not get on-board with the program.

People are entitiled to do what they want to do and believe what they want to believe. We are also entitled to our own opinion when it comes to matters like these.

  4. While SEIU may be within its legal rights to remove stewards, what the hell are they doing getting workers fired?

There are some basic principles on which unions are based and this violates not only these basic principles but also the trust that workers have in union leadership in general. When a union starts doing the same things that bosses have done: firing workers to silence dissent, its a sad day for organized labor.

  5. In response to Anonymous March 30, 2009 7:48 AM:

QUOTE: "Now, as for the Stewards that were so called FIRED, let me clear something up now. They were fired, but they were removed."

This makes no sense! Please try reading what you are posting before you actually post it - you would make a more effective argument if you didn't come off as some semi-literate spaz who can't even type a coherent sentence.

    Also,

QUOTE: "I believe that All of them were talked too and they are the ones that made the decision to step down/be removed themselves. The ex-stewards are the ones that chose not get on-board with the program."

This is 100% false! I know for a fact that Tammy and Veronica had an axe to grind with one Steward in particular and that they just flat-out fired him. This Steward did nothing to push the NUHW agenda and he was still removed.

    And,

QUOTE: "A lot of us old Stewards have seen and been the way that the previous SEIU UHW Leadership had run things and how they treated the Southern California Staff vs the Northern California Staff."

Again, this sentence doesn't really make that much sense... "...seen and been...", huh?...
oh well... if I get the gist of what you are saying, then yes, the Southern California Staff deserved to be treated like idiots by Ralph & Sal. Veronica, Tammy, & Jesse ARE idiots! Nothing gets done in Orange County because Tammy & Veronica are sitting at Starbucks on their big fat asses working out ways to screw with the membership. Jesse is the poster-child of the fact that promotion does not come through merit in SEIU.

    Furthermore,

QUOTE: "We are also entitled to our own opinion when it comes to matters like these."

Don't bother letting facts get in the way of you forming your own opinions. If you call yourself an "old" steward, then you've been around long enough to see what has happened - and eventually T & V will turn on you.

  6. why don't you nuhw people get your stories straight! the stewards had a choice to stay on board, and they resigned because they are brain washed by nuhw. People wake up , you are following a theft, who stole OUR UNION DUES becuase he wants the power and its greed!
It took us 65 years to get a great contract, and it amazing me how ignorant people are, that they cannot read between the lines.
sally roselli, is evil, and appointmented himself the president of this non-existing union. You call this a democratic union?
SEIU did not take anyone's voice away, everything stayed the same. Look up your facts on the NLRB website and see for yourself, all the lies that nuhw has put out there. GET YOURSELF EDUCATED,DON'T LISTEN TO LIES!
